Community Wildfire Roundtables

Community Wildfire Roundtables bring together people and organizations that work on wildfire protection for BC Interior communities. The connection helps enhance coordination and communication among those responsible for different aspects of wildfire preparedness and risk reduction.

About the Roundtables

Community Wildfire Roundtables help BC Interior communities by supporting good coordination and communication among the organizations responsible for different aspects of wildfire preparedness and risk reduction. There's never been a more important time, with both BC and Canada having experienced in 2023 the worst fire seasons on record.

Roundtables now serve eight BC communities and surrounding areas: Williams Lake, Lillooet, Clearwater, Clinton, Quesnel, Prince George, Salmon Arm and the Similkameen Valley.

Members of the Roundtables review and discuss progress on wildfire management activities, including:

• FireSmart education
• Timber harvesting
• Fuel management
• Resources and capacity – including involvement of volunteer fire departments, ranchers and the agriculture sector
• First Nations traditional burning

The Roundtables are important in implementation of Community Wildfire Protection Plans (CWPP) also. As set out by the BC Wildfire Service, a Community Wildfire Protection Plan serves to:

• Identify the wildfire risks within and surrounding a community
• Describe the potential consequences if a wildfire was to impact the community
• Define the threat to human life, property and critical infrastructure from wildfires in an identified area
• Identify measures necessary to mitigate threats
• Outline a plan of action to implement measures

Public FireSmart™ Presentation

How do fire disasters happen? What can you do to better protect your home from fire risk?

Community Wildfire Roundtables together hosted a series of free public presentations in May 2023 — in Lillooet, Clinton, Williams Lake, Quesnel and Clearwater — to help homeowners take a FireSmart™ approach to home maintenance and security.
